East End
Living & Lost
Visit the pubs that remain. Remember those that London has lost. Two sides of one remarkable story.
From the East End's disappearing pubs to Soho's surviving institutions and the taverns along the Thames, Jonathan Madden captures the buildings, character and memories that make London's pub culture worth preserving.
Jonathan began painting London pubs in 2015, initially around Aldgate, Whitechapel and the Highway — neighbourhoods bound up with his own family's history. His work looks beyond architecture to the communities these places once held, and the stories that survive even when the pubs do not.
Some are still busy with life. Others have closed, changed use or disappeared altogether. Together they form a portrait of a changing London, painted with an eye for atmosphere, memory and the overlooked.
“These structures and their spaces preserve the spirit of an area or place.”Jonathan Madden · Artist's statement

Jonathan's pub works offer more than a gallery to browse. We're developing collections that invite people to explore surviving pubs, while keeping the stories and artwork of lost places alive.

A trail of riverside taverns, historic quays and London views through Jonathan's distinctive drawings.
Celebrating the colourful, singular institutions that have given Soho so much of its identity.
The three collections are proposals, not yet published collecting routes. Individual pub and heritage statuses will be verified before launch.
PintStash makes discovering pubs into an experience. Jonathan has agreed to bring all 31 of his pub artworks into that world, giving each digital card a piece of original art and a genuine connection to London's pub culture.
At a pub that's still open, players will be able to check in and collect its card. For a pub that has been lost, a heritage card can preserve the artwork and the story without asking anyone to visit a place that no longer exists.
All artwork remains © Jonathan Madden. Permission is limited to the agreed digital collecting cards and this artist profile, with credit and links to Jonathan. PintStash has no rights to create physical cards, prints, merchandise, other reproductions or third-party licences without separate express agreement.

London · Artist seriesStar of the EastBorn in East London and now based at a studio in South West London, Jonathan has drawn the city throughout his life. Observational sketching lies at the heart of his practice; he develops those drawings into paintings, exploring composition, colour and the character of familiar streets.
He is especially drawn to the buildings that regeneration threatens to sweep away — places whose walls and details still bear the imprint of generations. London's pubs have become a particularly compelling way for him to tell that story.
